Baptism — Definition & Effects (pp. 56–57)

What is Baptism?
Baptism is the sacrament in which we are freed from sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the Church.
What are the four effects of Baptism?
  1. We are joined to Christ and rise to new life.
  2. We become members of the Church, the Body of Christ, the People of God.
  3. We are united with all others who have been baptized.
  4. Justification is conferred — won by the passion of Christ; it conforms us to the justice of God.
Why is Baptism special among the sacraments?
Baptism is the first sacrament. It is needed before the other sacraments and opens the doors of grace.

Genesis, Original Sin & Salvation

What did God command in Genesis 2:15–17?
Adam and Eve were free to eat from any trees except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If they ate from it, they would die.
What was life like for Adam and Eve at first?
They lived in perfect union with God. There was no pain, sin, or death at first.
How did Adam and Eve disobey God?
They disobeyed by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
What is the result of that disobedience called?
The result is called Original Sin.
How does Original Sin affect us?
We are born with Original Sin and are tempted to personal sin.
What did God promise? What is the Incarnation?
God promised to save us from sin. The Incarnation is when the Son of God became man.
Who is Jesus, and how does He save us?
Jesus is the Son of God. By His death and resurrection He saves us.
What is Salvation?
Salvation is the forgiveness of sins and restoring friendship with God.
How is Baptism connected to salvation?
Baptism is necessary for salvation. It frees us from original sin, and all personal sins are forgiven.
What happens to us forever in Baptism? How often can we be baptized?
We are sealed and anointed forever in Christ. Baptism is received only once.
What roles of Jesus do the baptized share?
We share in Jesus’ role of priest, prophet, and king.
What is eternal life? Who are the saints?
Eternal life is living in happiness with God forever in Heaven. Saints are followers who lived holiness on earth and now share eternal life; they help the Church grow in holiness (united with Christ).

Celebration of Baptism (Babies & Young Children) (pp. 70–71, 74–75)

What are the main steps and signs?
  1. Reception: greet at the entrance; sign of the cross on the forehead.
  2. Liturgy of the Word: Bible readings — God is present.
  3. Anointing with the oil of catechumens: to cleanse and strengthen.
  4. Baptism: immerse or pour water three times while saying, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
  5. Sacred Chrism: perfumed oil blessed by the bishop; anoint the head.
  6. White garment = new life in Christ; lit candle = Christ has enlightened the newly baptized.

What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the sacrament in which we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in a special way.
Who is the usual minister of Confirmation?
The bishop is the usual minister.
What oil is used, and where?
Chrism is the oil used to anoint the forehead.
What is the laying on of hands?
The bishop and priest extend their hands over the candidates.
What is required to receive Confirmation?
A person must be in a state of grace.
What does a sponsor do?
A sponsor helps prepare the candidate and supports them.
What is a Confirmation name?
A Confirmation name is usually a saint’s name.
What happens in Confirmation regarding the Holy Spirit?
We are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
